Excellent southern food in Hawaii is something I've been missing. Southern Love is tucked into a cute and cozy space with indoor and outdoor dining. The food is fresh and delicious (and on the spicy side) true to its southern roots but with the chef's unique touch. It's casual dining with elevated dishes. Do yourself a favor and check it out

This place is amazing. The food was fresh and homemade and had a lot of flavor. The service was excellent as well. Super friendly staff/owners. Loved the sweet tea + refills. A great mix of Southern food with local flair. If you can find a seat, this place is a good spot to have a chill time and grind. One thing that you should know is that there are only a few parking stalls in front of the restaurant. Parking in the neighboring stalls could get you towed. We ended up parking at the Wholefoods parking lot and walking. This is really no fault of the restaurant owners. Other than that, I would tell the owners to not change a thing. Brunch was definitely great.

Note: This is a brunch review based on three visits. Well cooked, plenty flavorful, stick to the ribs goodness. whose plating belies is industrial Kakaako location. This isn't a fast food, take out, plate lunch spot though they have done a good job balancing the portion size with a friendly price. Breaking it down, biscuits. If your dish doesn't come with one, get one. Fluffy on the inside, crisp on the outside with just the right amount of sweetness. These buttermilk biscuits are great alone, even better smothered in their rich, peppery country gravy. The fried chicken (based on the chicken in the chicken biscuit and gravy), very good. Buttermilk brined. Tender and very juicy on the inside, crisp on the outside without being greasy. Great grits. Rich and creamy. It makes the perfect pairing for the perfectly cooked buttery shrimp. One outstanding bowl of shrimp n' grits. Finally, the garlic chicken and waffles. Different in a good way. Take a crisp house made waffle but instead of plain fried chicken, top it with slices of chicken reminiscent of Hawaii's own garlic chicken. The pairing is brilliant and will blow away the traditional version building with so much more flavor than simply pouring maple syrup over all. Very friendly service. IMPORTANT: This is a small operation. It make take some time for dishes to arrive. Be patient. Also, do not go with a large group. Limited parking in front but plenty of metered street parking in the area. Good thing we have legs. Southern restaurants are hard to find in Hawaii. Southern Love more than satisfies.

Southern Love located along Queen Street. Limited parking in front of the restaurant. Casual dining excellent service and outstanding food. We had the Fried Chicken with Collard Greens and Cornbread, Pulled Pork Sliders, Slow Smoked Pork Ribs with Cornbread, Fried Green Tomatoes, and the Mac Daddy Bowl (Mac and Cheese topped with Pulled Pork and Drizzled with BBQ sauce. Wonderfully prepared and presented. The Collard Greens were definitely Cravable. All were Delicious . Locally owned and operated. Great place! Definitely worth the trip to Downtown.

Oh my biscuits! Sit in the front seat and you get a Southern Omakase style? Owner/Chef hustling while you get front row seat to his southern cooking! Feels like he's cooking for you in his own home. Service: --Decent. He greeted us when we walked in. He was crazy busy since it was peak brunch time. Service was slow to start, we seated and waited till someone took our order. Somehow he still manages to deliver good food without cutting corners. Some indoor and outdoor seating. I'd call in your order if you're in a rush since it took some time to get our food. Ambiance: Overall nicely decorated spot that gives homey vibes. Counter seating in the front, a few tables inside and outdoor seating. Warning: it's HOT! No ac, so it was quite warm. I'd bring a fan or try to sit outside maybe next time. Pretty uncomfortable to sit inside near the counter area. Was sweating a lot. Food/Drinks: --Chicken Biscuits & Gravy ($17) Juicy boneless fried chicken nestled between 2 soft crispy biscuits, smothered with house made gravy and topped with green onions for that extra flavor. I savored each bite wanting more and more. Modest portion. --Coffee ($2.5) Very affordable and good cup of joe to enjoy your brunch. He uses Cafe du Monde which was good. Comes out piping hot though. Value: Dishes are sized more modest for the price, so I was satisfied with the meal without feeling too full. Might be too little for a hungry person though. Southern take, but definitely not like the portions you get in the south. Parking: The parking and location is probably the biggest con of this place, as there are only a few stalls in the front. We had to circle around and pay for metered street parking. We paid for 1 hour parking and we came during the brunch rush so it was the perfect amount of time to dine in. We will be back again!

So... I meant to write this review the other day but writing this on my phone would hurt since I have so much to write. The night we checked into the Airbnb we were at, the security guard told us that we HAD to try Southern Love. We figured we'd give it a chance the next afternoon and didn't have high hopes... We walked in and were immediately greeted by Corey who had the biggest smile on his face. A smile like he knew what he was doing and was going to show it in his food. The place was like walking into someone's kitchen with a regular unassuming house stove in there. We placed our orders and he got to work. Everything was made right there in front of us with ease, care, and love. As I started talking to him, I realized that we have the same last name, and our families are from the same place. The food was so good that, even if we're not related, I'm claiming him as a cousin. The biggest compliment I can give him is that my kid, who is BEYOND picky, cleaned his plate and wanted to lick it. He then ate 2 desserts. Another is, you've dethroned my Auntie as having the best collards. She'll never know. She doesn't have Yelp! Please check out Corey. Corey, I'll see you at the reunion cuz!

Cozy little spot nestled between warehouses. Came in a bit late for brunch since they close earlier on Saturday. Ordered coffee, chicken and waffles and chicken and biscuits. Their biscuits are made in house along with everything else. Just wished I could have tried the whole menu it was so good. Outside seating and indoor, felt like it was truly a home cooked meal. The ambiance inside was literally a kitchen you'd find at home. We got our food fresh and the gravy was divine on top of the biscuits just sealed the deal. Menu isn't too huge but would love to come back and try their dinner menu since it had a lot of promising food options that look delicious from other people's post. Definitely recommend this place if you're craving a southern kick on breakfast.

So my better half has been missing Southern food and the last time I was here, thanks to a Yelp Elite event, I managed to get an extra biscuit which she, I swear inhaled in seconds after I placed it on the dining table. So obviously, Southern Love got placed high on our dining out list. We ordered the pulled pork sliders, shrimp po'boy, and a side of mac and cheese. The three pulled pork sliders were delicious, tender with just the right amount of pickles. I decided to be healthier and went with a side salad over fries. My better half enjoyed the fried shrimp and tomatoes on her po'boy sandwich, with fries between bites of golden brown shrimp wrapped in soft bread. Mac and cheese was a nicely balanced, not to rich, with the right balance of cheese, baked to perfection. Parking can be rough as there are only six stalls and not much street parking directly before or after the restaurant. Be prepared to look for a stall for your car as far as Mother Waldron park. There's both indoor and outdoor dining along with a clean bathroom. Corey Love (hence the name) and his partner are still as awesome as ever, so stop by and support small local business!

I love soul food and this is exactly where to find it in Honolulu :) Immediately after work, I headed over to pick up dinner to go. Wouldn't you know it, there was already a line and I was lucky to park in one of the last stalls available. After I placed my order, I sat at one of the open tables and waited patiently. The dining area is clean and cozy :) It was fun to watch this husband and wife team cooking it up and not appear stressed...that's Love! Their fried okra is a perfect "extra" to compliment Combo Plate B. The bbq ribs were succulent and flavorful. The fried catfish was on point, crisp on the outside and still tender on the inside...Well seasoned and not fishy at all. I really enjoyed the cornbread and bbq beans too. This sure was quite filling, easily feeds two people. Their sweet tea was a refreshing way to finish this lovely southern meal. Thank you Love family, glad you're here and I don't have to fly far to get delicious soul food :) Definitely coming back to taste other menu items!
